Via Our Friends at Montrose Point
We have now completed our work for 2009. It has been a very good year.
Here are some highlights of the year. We removed countless bags of troublesome weeds. Because of our effort, we are on the way to eliminating garlic mustard and we made a serious dent in the thistle population. We successfully planted 3,000 marram grass shoots. We added over 40 shrubs to the Magic Hedge. We began preparation for a second marram grass planting, a final shrub planting on the north side of the Magic Hedge, a savanna planting at the entrance to the Point, a prairie planting on the south end of the Magic Hedge. Wow! Be ready to plant next year.
We were also pleased to see our neighbor the Montrose Beach Dunes receive the finale herbicide treatment it needed to flourish.
I hope you have all had an opportunity to stand back and look at the shrub planting on the north end of the Magic Hedge that we have been working on for the last several years. It came into its own this year and is now a dominant feature of the Hedge providing an important food source for migrating birds.
This has been a good year for Montrose Point.
And of course nothing would happen without the volunteers of Montrose Point. Thanks to all who have donated your valuable time to make our City a better place by supporting this important natural area that is used by millions of migrating birds.

Via the Department of Transportation
This winter, the Chicago Department of Transportation is pleased to announce the start of the Sidewalk Snow Clearance campaign. The campaign aims to increase the number of Chicagoans who clear snow and ice from the sidewalks adjacent to their homes and businesses. Clearing snow and ice from sidewalks is particularly important because without a wide, clear path, snow and ice make it difficult for everyone–especially people with disabilities, seniors, and children–to walk safely.
The Sidewalk Snow Clearance campaign recognizes businesses that do an outstanding job of clearing snow and ice from nearby sidewalks. Residents can nominate businesses for their snow-removal efforts by clicking on the link below. Nominated businesses will receive a thank-you letter and a certificate.
This winter's campaign builds on the success of a similar campaign last winter.
Citizens can report addresses where sidewalks are unshoveled to 311.
