Do more than make it through the winter—make a difference
11/24/2009

Via the Center for Economic Progress

The Center for Economic Progress is looking for volunteers interested in building skills, meeting new people, and working one-on-one with low-income families to help them move toward financial security.

To volunteer at our Uptown tax preparation sites:

  • No experience is necessary—choose a position to fit your current skills or learn something new.
  • All trainings are provided; classes run in January.
  • Volunteers are asked to donate 20 hours at our Uptown tax sites at Truman College (1145 W. Wilson Ave.) or North Side Credit Union (1011 W. Lawrence Ave.) between January and April.

Volunteer positions available as:

  • Tax preparers: Work one-on-one with clients to file federal and state tax returns and provide counseling on tax credits and forms.
  • Tax site assistants: Perform essential non-tax-preparation activities, including client greeting and screening, translating and/or administrative duties.

See why over 1,200 volunteers dedicated last winter to serving 33,000 families statewide! View training schedules, find a site near you, and register to volunteer at www.economicprogress.org/volunteer.

Applications for U.S. Census Jobs Being Accepted Now
11/18/2009

Image Via U.S. Census Bureau

The U.S. Census Bureau is recruiting temporary, part-time census takers for the 2010 Census. These short-term jobs offer good pay, flexible hours, paid training, and reimbursement for authorized work-related expenses, such as mileage incurred while conducting census work. Best of all, census takers work right in their own communities.

Census taker jobs are excellent for people who want to work part-time, those who are between jobs, or just about anyone who wants to earn extra money while performing an important service for their community.

Visit the U.S. Census Bureau online or call the Census Jobs Line at 1-888-861-2010.  Information on how and where to apply is also available at the City's Workforce Centers, at library branches and by calling 311.
