But bricks and mortar tell only part of the story. Tonight I am very pleased to announce two new statistics that directly relate to our quality of life and our future. First, the Chicago Police Department now reports that the 20th District (which encompasses 40% of the 46th Ward) now has the lowest crime rate in the city and the neighboring district (23rd) which comprises the rest of the ward, has the second lowest rate of crime in Chicago.

A safe, vibrant and diverse community has always been my top priority. And we have been able to accomplish this objective by using a three-pronged approach. First, working with our local police commanders we have identified so-called “hot spots” and quickly moved to reduce and eliminate criminal activity. Secondly, we have provided our young people with concrete positive alternatives in the areas of recreation and education that help keep them from the insidious culture of gangs, drugs and violence that plagues so many of our urban and now suburban communities.  Third, we have taken pro-active measures to prevent crime through programs like CAPS.  Enforcement, Alternatives, and Prevention.  It works.
