Teaming with the Greater Chicago Food Depository
12/01/2006

Since 2002, the Greater Chicago Food Depository, in conjunction with Alderman Shiller's 46th Ward Community Service Office, has been providing area residents with free groceries.

The program takes place from 9am to 1pm (or until supplies run out) and is held on the third Wednesday of every month. Ald. Shiller's Chief of Staff, Denice Davis, runs the program each month with the help of 10 to 15 local volunteers. The Greater Chicago Food Depository offers fresh produce, dairy items and dry goods.

The program is run out of various spaces in the 46th Ward. During the winter, the 46th Ward Office works with area business owners to arrange for indoor space to allow for a warmer day.

In addition to the groceries that are given away each month, the 46th Ward office adds chickens to the food baskets for the December Holiday Season each year. With the help of volunteers, the 46th Ward Office and the Greater Chicago Food Depository, an average of 200-300 local residents walk away each month with a cart full of groceries for them and their families.
