Page 25 of 70 ELECTION ENDORSEMENT ‘03February 14, 2003 Chicago Tribune Final aldermanic endorsements
46th Ward (North Side): The earth must have trembled when Mayor Richard Daley engaged in a public love fest of sorts with Ald. Helen Shiller, since 1987 his most ardent and consistent critic. He announced he would endorse her, and she announced she would endorse him. Shiller claims this doesn't mean she's been co-opted, only that Daley has become more responsive to the needs of her diverse community. Shiller has, in fact, worked tirelessly in her ward on issues ranging from alleviating density to affordable housing and economic development. She also has played a valuable role over the years in asking tough questions about the mayor's budgets. Shiller is endorsed over Sandra Reed, a schoolteacher and the 46th Ward's Democratic committeeman, who lost to Shiller in 1999. Copyright 2003 Chicago Tribune Company
