The Earned Income Tax Credit

During these tough economic times, you are encouraged to get all the tax relief you deserve!  You or someone you know could be eligible for a tax refund!

Owe less tax and get cash back from the IRS through the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC).  Even if you don't owe income tax, you can get the credit and cash!

  • Does your family earn up to $36,995 with one child? You may get up to $2,917 back.
  • Does your family earn up to $41,646 with more than one child?  You may get up to $4,824 back.
  • Are you at least age 25 and under age 65, without children, and earning up to $15,880?  You mayget up to $438 back.
  • Average EITC refund last year for Chicagoans was $2,096.
  • Investment income cannot be more than $2,950 for the year.

Free tax preparation assistance from professionally training volunteers is available in Uptown at:

  • Truman College, 1145 W Wilson Ave., Mondays - Thursdays from 5:30pm to 8pm and Saturdays 10am to 1pm. 
  • North Side Credit Union, 1011 W Lawrence Ave., Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 5:30pm to 8pm.
  • McCormick Boys & Girls Club, 4835 N Sheridan Rd., Saturdays from 8:30am to 11:30am.

What you need to bring:

  1. All 2008 W-2 and 1099 forms
  2. Social Security cards for all household members
  3. Amount of "Economic Stimulus Payment" received
  4. Copy of 2007 tax return
  5. Photo identification

These programs are partially funded by the Illinois Department of Human Services and the City of Chicago.
