Page 2 of 3 We increased human services infrastructure in this budget. I will be the first to tell you there are problems with homelessness. I will be the first to tell you that these problems are not going away and are, in fact, getting worse. We have made a step forward with the restructuring that is being done. Let me give you a few examples of why I think this budget is a move in the right direction. The Skyway. Do we take that money and pay off our debt, or do we use it to do other things? We have chosen to increase our human services infrastructure by using a small amount of new revenue from the bond we have created and from the annuities. Privatization. I think that it is a mistake to try and find answers here. It is important to hold contractors accountable, and it is up to us to do this. But we have to see what works and what doesn't before we point the finger here. In regards to the airport, we need to know what is a result of privatization and what can be attributed to other factors. In terms of new revenues, the state needs to reorganize so that we are not dependent on regressive fees. They need pressure on them in order to get this done. |
