Helen Shiller has always believed that local elected officials need to be responsive to local needs. Part of being a good public servant is being creative in serving the public in ways that do not cost tax payers. Along those lines, in recent years Alderman Shiller's ward service office:
- Holds regular State I.D. days where the Secretary of State comes to the Ward Office to open a temporary satellite office for Ward residents
- Teams with the Greater Chicago Food Depository for a monthly food giveaway
- Entered into several agreements with private businesses to create hundreds of overnight parking spots for area residents
- Entered into agreements with private businesses to aid in the expediting of snow removal during blizzards
- Created various innovative job training programs
