Page 3 of 3 I mention this because we all need to identify our plumb lines to be intentional about what we do. And also because the sense of powerless that people often feel stops them from taking action. I say this to say we should be skeptical not cynical. If we are to build community and create human development then we need to be consciously wary of the cynicism we are exposed to daily, apply skepticism in its place so we can get at the truth of the matter and in doing so get at real solutions. Cynicism leads only to a sense of powerlessness – “you can’t fight city hall;” “they’re all crooks,” etc., etc. And this sense of powerlessness too often creates an atmosphere of reaction and reaction rarely leads to a thoughtful let alone effective response. Skepticism on the other hand cries out for clarity and knowledge, information and experience from which one can act affirmatively. With the degrees that each of us leaves here with may come new opportunities. But consider this additional challenge. Take on the responsibility to be conscious life time learners; take the tools you have learned at SNL use them in your life, your work, your own day to day struggles, growth and development, and change the world. I believe that anything is possible. I also believe that there is a great deal of improvement needed in this world before it is possible that the majority of people sharing this earth with us today have a chance at a decent quality of life. It is in this context that I say congratulations to each of us on our current success and achievement, and leave each of us with this call: use it well, be an intentional learner and be an intentional agent of change!
