Alderman Shiller Not Running for Reelection

Open Letter to 46th Ward Residents

As you may know, I will not be running in next year’s aldermanic election. I have made this decision with profound gratitude to the people of the 46th Ward who have seen fit to elect and re-elect me six times and with pride in the accomplishments and improvements that have occurred in the 46th Ward over the last quarter of a century.

For the last 24 years I have approached my responsibility in shaping public policy as well as ensuring an effective delivery of city services to the 46th Ward from the perspective that the best public policy comes from a process that attacks the problem at the point of its most serious manifestation and then identifies solutions from the point of view of those most affected. Often that is those with the fewest resources, but not always. Doing so has allowed me to follow one set of rules for all the people of the 46th Ward.

I will continue to serve as alderman through the end of this term that ends next April 30th, 2011. I intend to remain involved with the issues that affect our ward and city.

Again, it has been an honor to serve as your alderman.

Helen Shiller
