707 W. Waveland

Tenants at 707 West Waveland were among the first to look to organize to purchase their HUD-subsidized building.  Tenants  initially approached the owner about buying their building in the early 1990s, but their efforts were rejected at that time.  Confusion and frustrations led to some divisions and misconceptions amongst the tenants. Ald. Shiller was instrumental in soothing the divisions, clearing up the misconceptions and, challenging the tenants to keep their eye on the prize and to keep organizing.

Continued persistence and tenant organizing led to renewed negotiations in the mid-1990s.  The tenants at 707 W. Waveland closed on their building in 1998.
