In the ward our work on infrastructure is unequaled in the city and 90% of the vacant lots here when I became alderman have been developed for many uses including: the Uptown Library, the People’s Music School. Christopher House’s day care complex, Challenger Park and other play lots, commercial and retail space, low income and market rate housing.

All our streets and publicly owned alleys have been resurfaced; our sewer system virtually replaced; 40 blocks have been or are about to be completely re-lamped; and 35 blocks of sidewalks have been replaced.

In the City Council I have accomplished many things – including some that originally met strong resistance from the administration.

Before the end of apartheid in South Africa, I sponsored legislation to strengthen our sanctions that resulted in the divestment by 2 of the 3 Chicago. banks doing business in South Africa.

I sponsored the legislation to triple the city’s spending on AIDS.

I spearheaded city support for nurses and police in the public schools.
