Page 2 of 4 All our streets and publicly owned alleys have been resurfaced; our sewer system virtually replaced; 40 blocks have been or are about to be completely re-lamped; and 35 blocks of sidewalks have been replaced. In the City Council I have accomplished many things – including some that originally met strong resistance from the administration. Before the end of apartheid in South Africa, I sponsored legislation to strengthen our sanctions that resulted in the divestment by 2 of the 3 Chicago banks doing business in South Africa. I sponsored the legislation to triple the city’s spending on AIDS. I spearheaded city support for nurses and police in the public schools. I introduced the legislation to remove the city’s restriction on day care centers that limited the time they could be opened to 9 p.m., so that now day care centers are able to provide child care for children whose parents work non-traditional shifts. |
